Don’t Forget To Breathe!

The other day I had a heart broken woman attend my office for her legal matter. She was particularly distraught as it was very fresh and new for her, this time last week she had no idea what this week would hold for her. Her and her husband had exciting near future plans together, they were enjoying life, well so she thought. She had absolutely no idea that her life was about to change. Life is full of challenges, disappointments and heartaches, in my everyday life I am faced with other people who are in the depths of a major curve ball which is the early days of facing separation and loss. So what are some of the important things that you should do when you are faced with one of the moments in your life, whether it is divorce, loss, the loss of a job, other important relationships or health issue.

Life can leave you wondering ‘why is this happening to me?’ She was most certainly asking these questions.

Getting through the first days, weeks and even months of a new challenge or separation can be one of the hardest things that you can go through, especially if the separation has come as a surprise. Sleeping, eating or thinking straight can be difficult to do when you feel as though your life has been turned upside down.

So what should you do in these moments?

In my experience as a family lawyer, the first thing you should do is BREATH! Take a deep breath and don’t panic or be reactive. Take time and space for yourself so that you can think clearly. It feels like your entire life has been thrown upside down, but the truth is, it hasn’t. You still have yourself, your health, you ability and your life.

Gather a great support team around you, professionals as well as family and friends. You will need these people around you, but keep breathing.

The thing is, the course of your life has changed and who knows maybe for the better. When separation happened to me suddenly, I was left feeling just like the client I saw the other day. Shaken to the core and I felt for a couple of months that my life was over, but it wasn’t! Once I gathered myself, I realised I was still me, despite what was happening to me at the time. Since then I have created an amazing new path for my life and it is better than ever and you can too. But you do need to give yourself time for the new path to reveal itself.
